A wedding is not only the union of two people, but the coming together of two families, each with their own stories, traditions, and love. Today, we celebrate the beginning of a shared future — where laughter, memories, and new bonds will grow.
Olivia was born in Hong Kong, but the Schmutz family packed up and moved to Switzerland in 1995. She grew up with her two older sisters, Melanie and Natalie — which explains a lot. Olivia got her sweetness and manners from Julie, and her punctuality from Bene: if you're not five minutes early, you're late!
Wouter inherited his warmth, thoughtfulness, and love of the outdoors from his mother — whether it's hiking, beach days, or simply spending time outside with friends. From his father, he got his easygoing nature and a healthy enthusiasm for gaming. Wouter grew up in the small town of Amsternarde. From an early age, he surrounded himself with a group of friends — some of whom are here today to celebrate his wedding. Life brought changes as his parents, Jan and Corine, went their separate ways, and Wouter’s family grew in beautiful ways: Corine found love again with Dave from Scotland, and Jan with Lia from Bergen op Zoom. Whenever Wouter visits the Netherlands, he makes a point of visiting both and making time for all the people he loves.
They raised them and they know them best. In this special feature, we sit down for an exclusive chat with the two women who’ve known the bride and groom since day one: their mums. They offer us a rare and touching glimpse into the love, laughter, and life lessons behind the happy couple.
What was Olivia like as a child?
Olivia was sweet, happy, joyful and trouble-free as a child.
Can you share your favorite memory?
Olivia’s first word was ‘turtle.’ We don’t know why. But mostly we are so grateful for the many happy memories surrounded by Olivia’s special sparkle.
What was your first impression about Wouter?
My first impression of Wouter was his wide, generous smile which reminded me of her father’s.
When did you realize this relationship was serious?
I realized this relationship was serious very early on and was not surprised when they decided to move in together.
Do you have any advice for the couple?
My advice is to keep your sense of humour and to respect each other.
If you had one wish for the couple, what would it be?
A baby, of course, but mostly, a long, happy and healthy life together.
Do you have any advice for the couple?
Wouter and Olivia are wise and know what is important to them in life. They make good choices and, in my opinion, don't need any advice from me. I have full confidence in them.
If you could grant the couple one wish, what would it be?
I wish them lots of fun and enjoyment in their life together. The rest will come naturally.
What was Wouter like as a child?
He was sweet and easy-going, as well as active and enterprising. He enjoyed parties and celebrations, and would join in as long as there was something to do. After all, sleep is for fools! He always loved sports, such as judo, hockey, football, winter sports, climbing and sailing. His friends were (and still are) important to him.
Can you share your favorite memory?
Last summer I was able to make a climbing tour with my son. This experience I will treasure for always.
What was your first impression of Olivia?
I immediately thought: he has found Miss Switzerland! She's sweet and kind, strong and independent, and has a great sense of humour. Jackpot!
When did you realize this relationship was serious?
When Wouter talked about Olivia, it was clear that he was in love with her. Moving in together is also a clear indication of serious intentions. Last summer, Wouter wanted to introduce me to Olivia's parents. It doesn't get any clearer than that, does it?
